Steve, thank you for being my friend.
I have a lot of respect for you in what you’re doing. I look forward to seeing when you have completed your first component of your healing journey.
I have always admired your vulnerability and how you have shown up for others.
The past is in your head, the future is in your hands.

Take care pal,

Hi Steve, thinking of you throughout this time. You are an inspiration to us all and I am grateful i have had the opportunity to get to know you and work with you. I truly admire the way you show up day to day and the courage and vulnerability you consistently show- it is the definition of strength in a man. I hope you are getting the help you need, Ive told you before, but you are one of the driving forces that inspired me to volunteer for the health and wellness committee and im proud of all the things we accomplished together. You will always have my support. looking forward to connecting with you soon.

Steve…I’m not sure you know how much I appreciated playing a small part of your second book. You asked me to read the manuscript and provide a testimonial at a time when I needed some reassurance. I was questioning everything I was doing…at home…at work…in life. You picked me up, like you have for so many others. You inspired me, like you have done for so many others. I tell people to “take care” as an action statement. Take the actions needed to care for yourself so we can continue to care for others. I’m looking forward to the day we can sit down together and have a coffee. Love ya brother. Take care.

Hey buddy,

July 1st coming up around the corner. PSU will be out with Esquimalt and Saanich in attendance. This incredible collaboration, that makes Victoria safer, is largely thanks to you and Grant. You guys punched through that glass ceiling and made it possible for police and fire to work collaboratively in this region. So when I’m riding around in the QRT van July 1st in the morning… with my gear on… and proudly wearing a RED “medic” shirt like the other Fire guys on our squads, I’ll be thinking of you buddy! What a legacy you’ve left for our region! Heading to work now, on a weekend, as we all do because it’s part of what we do. I’ll be working… just like I know you’ll be doing the work yourself. Be well buddy, and see you soon!

A priest, an imam, and a rabbit go to a blood donation centre. The rabbit goes up to the registration desk, and says “I think I’m a type-O”.

There’s a cheesy doctor/dad joke for you to kick of your day. xo Vu

Hi Steve,

Just wanted to let you know I’ve been thinking about you. I know you’re taking some time to look after yourself right now, and I really hope it’s giving you the space you need.

You’ve helped so many people — including me — just by being who you are. The way you show up for others is inspiring to me, and I hope you’re able to give some of that same kindness and care to yourself now.

Looking forward to connecting with you again soon and grabbing that coffee we keep chatting about. It will be great to see you again soon!

Cheers,

Robbie

Hey Steve, just checking in on you buddy. Hope process is going well, that is satisfying, and that in spite of the hard work, I’m sure the challenges you’re feeling a bit better every day. you’ve got a lot of people in the corner! So, in addition to carving your own paddle, what have you been doing? Have you carved a canoe too? What does a regular day look like? Therapy, reading, yoga, exercise, other stuff? Imagine you’re doing a lot of hard work, but I hope that you get an opportunity to rest… When is the last time you’re genuinely rested? About 10 years… OK buddy, all the best to you, hope this finds you well, chat soon.

Keon let me know you’re doing some personal work , it’s a journey for some of us that never ends. The best things in life are always accessible. I need to remind myself that all the time… my dog, a little nature time, the buzz of risking life and limb .. the hug from someone who cares.
Look forward to doing some laps and taking in some epic views – that’s always something to set us straight

Been two weeks since we last chatted, I just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you again, today especially.

I’m very hopeful that you’re rested and able to start working on removing those pressures and memories that are bothering you.

I’m very hopeful your feeling better then two weeks ago, long road ahead still, but pretty sure once you’ve read all these you’ll see the difference you’ve made, and find peace in knowing that you did what you set out to do. Making a change, positive effect, helping so many. I’ll check in again.

Chat soon 🤘️

‘Steve Serbic’ is a name we hear often in the fire service and beyond. A name known for compassion, support, leadership and kindness. You’ve given us all so much Steve, it’s our turn, to collectively make sure your cup is filled, too. During the initial days of Roger’s retirement you were so quick to say, ‘give him a big hug from me!’. Your simple words of encouragement and support meant so much. Now is the time to take care of you, lean on your community and focus on whatever you need to do for YOU. Sending positive thoughts, support and well wishes.

It was a bit intimidating following you and I knew I could never fill your shoes with the gifts you gave that department. Yesterday I stood at the podium and talked to the membership about how you and I had planned to be up there together talking about self care and being in each others corner to support when needed. I went on to say how now we need to support you.

I hope it’s going well and that you are finding time, space and tools to develop a new plan/program/routine… that works for you now and long into your retirement.

I flew to Victoria for the day today for my daughter Georgia’s graduation from UVIC. They talked about being proud of your accomplishments, showing up, hope and using your education to make community better . Sound familiar?

Take care, looking forward to connecting when you can.

Hey Steve

First things first: you’ve got a mountain of people and friends who care for you and are here to support you.

Second: you know I’m one of them and call me anytime.

I know things feel tough and dark right now, but I know you can find a lot of reasons to find hope. We’ve shared lots of stories and transparent conversations.
Get well my friend!!!

Thinking of you brother. Truthfully I had a strong urge to reach out last week to see how you were doing.

Dayne read me a message that said you are taking some time out to look after yourself. He also said a lot of amazing things about how you have been supporting him. It’s almost annoying how many times I hear how great you are! Only kidding of course. Obviously it’s pretty special to witness how you positively impact so many people. Now you’ve created some needed space to do the same for yourself.

This saying came to mind. I’m not sure if it resonates with you or not at the moment.

“Muddy water is cleared by leaving it alone” Allan Watts

If you have some free time you might find one of his talks interesting. They are on you tube. It’s past my bedtime now but know you are loved and supported. I’m just a message away anytime.

Just finished the banquet and tomorrow is the start of the education summit. I’ve been speaking to many people about self care to prevent the reaching of the critical phase.

I love you brother and am so proud of your commitment to yourself and your beautiful family. Keep chipping the puck out of your own end and before you know it, you will be creating odd man rushes!

There once was a Chief named Steve
Who was learning to Buddhist breathe
Peace in, and stress out
That’s what breathing is about
When he masters it he’ll find release.

Buddy, I figured a cheesy limerick would make you smile. Thinking of you, proud of you for doing this hard work. You got this! Love you man, Mark

Hey Steve.
You have so many good people who care about you.
I was in a very dark place not that long ago.
You gave me some very good advice.
You said to not worry about getting back to work. Worry about getting better for the rest of your life so you can be healthy and enjoy the golden years with your family.
That resonated with me and I remembered your advice often.
My unsolicited advice to you…
Minimize your life.
Live within your means.
Love what you have.
I sold my house and lots of things I thought I needed.
Got out of the lower mainland and simplified my life.
I lived in my travel trailer for 10 months.
It made me realize how little I need.
The counselling I got from WCB was a joke.
My closest friends helped me the most.
Again, you have so many good people that know you.
Lean on them.
I’m not a religious guy, so I don’t really pray for people but you are in my thoughts and I am wishing you the best and hope you find peace and happiness.
Thank you for the advice you gave me.
It made a difference.
Please consider the few words I share with you.

Steve,

I just want to tell you how damn proud I am of you. It takes an incredible amount of strength to take a knee and ask for help and you’ve done it with courage and honesty. That’s something only the truly brave can do.

You’ve always been someone people look up to, not just for what you’ve achieved, but for the way you carry yourself with heart and integrity. This next chapter is about healing, and I know without a doubt you’ve got the grit and soul to come out of this even stronger.

You’re not alone in this, we all have your back every step of the way.

Take care,
Mike Vincent

Hey Steve,

I’ve been thinking about you and just wanted to send some good energy your way. You’ve always been a steady presence and mentor for me—someone I’ve looked up to and learned a lot from. The way you’ve carried yourself, even through the hard times, has left a lasting impact on me.

I know things might feel heavy right now, but I want you to know I believe in you—always have. You’re not alone in this, and I’m here if you ever want to talk, vent, or just sit in silence. You’ve helped guide me through tough moments in my journey, and I’m standing with you now in yours.

Miss yah buddy,

Steve. My dear friend and writer, I offer you this wisdom from a Japanese elder: “Study and learn as if you are going to live to 120 years. And live as if today is all you have.” I know you will make the most of this opportunity. I know you will find the courage to do the work. You have helped so many. Now it is your turn to benefit from help. 💕 L

Steve:

You are one of my most favourite people on earth. You are a very special person loved by so many. You are endlessly selfless, kind, and passionate about everything you do. It’s your nature to serve others, to care, and to lead with courage.

You are strong and resilient. The tricky part is the strength and steadiness you show on the outside isn’t necessarily reflective of what’s going on, on the inside. Your external resilience has carried you far, but deep and lasting healing means turning inward and doing the work your heart and soul have been waiting for.

You’ve carried so much for so long, both personally and professionally, and all those quiet moments that no one else may fully see or understand. That takes a toll, even for someone as strong and capable as you. Steve you are a leader in everything you do, and now you have a chance to lead in your own healing, your own happiness, and your own future.

This time away is about you. About giving yourself the same compassion, time and support that you so willingly give to everyone around you. So, I hope this program is healing for you. I wish you an open heart, a clear mind, and the patience to sit with all that comes up. Allow yourself to be honest, take the space you need, and find your rainbow. 🌈

You deserve to experience the full benefit of what life has to offer; peace, happiness, and mental wellness. You are loved. Lastly, I’m so proud of you.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

I can’t put into words the impact that Steve has had on my life. Several years ago, after losing almost everything in my life, I hit my rock bottom. Riddled with anxiety and depression, I felt there was no way out. Thankfully I made a call to a man that I knew I could count on, someone not in my direct circle of friends…but someone I trusted and respected a great deal. Steve helped me out of the darkest place I’ve been in my life to where I am today. I couldn’t have done it without the help, support, and genuine care & concern he showed me throughout that time. He is a great friend, a great leader of men, and an even better person.
As a leader, what makes him so exceptional is the fact that he makes everyone else around better…no matter what the circumstances are. He will battle harder for anyone than they often will battle for themselves. His message is strong, his charisma is unequivocal, and his ability to make everyone else around him better is what make him such a tremendous person.

Steve,

I am so glad you have the support of Family and close friends, this affirms that we have people on our side to get us through life’s struggles.
Times where it seems we’re alone in our mind, family and friends ensure we never really walk alone! Thanks for opening up to Helen and accepting her guidance and for reaching out and letting me know your personal struggle. I’ll always be in your corner my friend.

The choices you’ve made to accept help, getting reconnected to your own life, is a big one. My personal healing was accepting the fact that there’s a tomorrow and yes, you can control it. It’s Steve time, time to get focus on only you, nothing else. This positive energy will ensure you will be back stronger and healthier!

You may not feel this, but you have had a very successful career, mentored so many people, set standards that other chief officers should strive to duplicate, and created a successful venture in mental health recognition and healing, you’ve helped so many. One more to focus on, it’s you.

Positive vibes for your adventure, see you when you’re home. Always a friend, Jay.
